11:00 AM Benchmark places: Dubai – Singapore: What is a waterfront city?

There are interesting similarities between Dubai and Singapore in how they chart not only their economic progress, but also how they plan, design and brand places in the two cities. Various places and projects in the two cities have become destinations for tourists and investors, and are the pride of local citizens and residents. This presentation will discuss what it is meant by a waterfront city, in addition to the ports and shipyards, a waterfront city you should also have:
  • A heritage waterway – like Dubai Creek and Singapore River
  • A wetland sanctuary – like Ras Al Khor and Sungei Buloh in Singapore
  • A waterfront retail – like Festival City and Singapore’s Vivo City
  • A waterfront park – like Mamzar Park and Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay
  • A resort island near urban centre – like Palm Jumeirah and Sentosa
  • A mega marina – like Dubai Marina and Singapore’s Marina Bay
  • A waterfront housing – like Palm Jumeirah, Sentosa, Dubai Marina and Marina Bay

12:00 PM Marine and coastal first annual hackathon: Development typologies based on marine environment

The challenge? The groups will be given a blank marine environment to develop into an urban coastal city using appropriate typologies such as:
  • Riverfront and canalfront development
  • Waterfront and lakefront development
  • Island development

To ensure the protection of the environment and balance the requirements of development, social and economic aspects.

What is a hackathon? An exercise in problem solving, a hackathon provides an opportunity to explore thoughtprovoking solutions in multidisciplinary teams through a mock project. Split up into 4 teams, you will have 30 minutes to brain storm and draw up your solutions and ideas before presenting your findings to the other teams.
